Scripture Reading: Colossians 1:11-20
Did you know that last spring American astronaut Michael Lopez-Algeria returned to earth after setting a U.S. record for 215 continuous days in space?
It took Michael a couple of months before he stopped walking funny. If you spend that many days in space, in the heavens, as it were, it will take some time to adjust to living on a gravity-pulling environment like earth. He’s not used to having weight, not used to having to lift himself out of a chair. For the first few weeks, everything seemed really heavy to him.
When you’ve been in heaven, it’s hard to live on earth.
Here’s what I’m wondering: How big of an adjustment will it be for us when we get to heaven after living so long on earth?
Fortunately, a lot of Christians live on earth just as they expect to in heaven. They have only kind words to say, and good deeds to offer. They have a smile for others, and a sympathetic ear. And so on. Making the transition to heaven will be easy for them.
Other Christians might be surprised in heaven. It might be quite a transition. For one thing, they might be surprised at who they find in heaven, and no doubt some will be surprised to see them there, too!
For another thing, they will find that words that they said on earth aren’t appropriate in heaven. So they will have to learn a new language.
And then they will find that in heaven there’s no talking about problems or talking about other people. So these Christians will need to find new topics for conversation.
Quite an adjustment! How do you think you’ll do?
Prayer: 0 God, thank you for preparing a place for me in your glorious eternity.
Help me to live in a way that brings a little heaven to earth! In Jesus’ name.
Amen.
